Block Party Recap: Transforming New Orleans, one block at a time
Our 3rd Annual Block Party was more than just a celebration; it was a reflection of what’s possible when community organizations, volunteers, staff, and neighbors come together with a shared purpose. From music, food, wellness resources, youth activities, voter engagement, performances, to meaningful conversations and joyful connection, the event created space for relationship-building, resource sharing, neighborhood pride, fundraising, awareness, and healing. This year we had over 600 attendees from 21 different neighborhoods, from the West Bank all the way to the East.
Most importantly, it highlighted the power of collective impact.
We doubled in size this year with 40+ organizations in attendance. A major highlight of the day was the presence of our incredible community partners and organizations. Each organization hosted an interactive booth, providing direct services and issue-based education, engaging families, and giving people concrete actions they can take to make New Orleans thrive. Together we:
Inspired action - collectively, our organizational partners got 720 sign ups.
Educated over 400 people on the city budget and civic systems
Helped hundreds of households drink safer water by providing water filters. (Sewerage & Water Board)
Helped hundreds of people understand their utility bills (Delta Utilities, Sewerage & Water Board).
Saved families money on their energy bills (EnergySmart)
Informed 160 people of the library's free resources and programs, made 15 new library cards, and gave away about 50 books to youth and teens. (NOLA Public Library)
Built a picnic table and donated it to the local community garden (ToolBank)
Distributed over 400 pounds of fresh produce (NOLA Food Policy Council)
Tested 11 people for HIV (CrescentCare)
Provided voter registration for attendees (Power Coalition)
Brought business to 4 local artisans
Signed up 13 youth for free transit fares through the Opportunity Pass program (RIDE)
Connected residents directly with their representatives - 3 City Council members attended the event to engage with residents.
The biggest success of the block party was the way it strengthened connections across the neighborhood and outside of it. Bringing people together to celebrate culture, play games, and listen to great music meant our community got stronger– local organizations expanded their reach, and residents left with resources, new relationships, a sense of belonging, excitement for future events.
“Neighbors in this area didn’t really talk to each other before the block party. Now we do. Even my friends from other neighborhoods can feel the difference when they come to our block.”
- Porsher, neighborhood resident
At this year’s event we introduced a new element – attendees could visit community organizations and collect game pieces that directly link to dozens of action steps or “Moves” they can make to be a part of building a better New Orleans. And dozens of people have followed up since. Missed the party but want to make your move? Learn more here.
Powered by community
This event would not have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, staff, and neighborhood supporters. From early morning setup to welcoming guests, supporting vendors, guiding activities, and staying through breakdown, every person played a role in making the day feel seamless and welcoming. According to our participant survey, 71% of attendees responded that they agreed or strongly agreed with the following statement: People in my neighborhood are willing to help their neighbors. The proof is in the pudding! Volunteers showed what it means to invest time and energy back into the neighborhood they care about. Most importantly, the community itself showed up with joy, generosity, and pride, reminding us why this work matters.
Why it mattered
At its core, this block party showed what community care looks like in action. When organizations collaborate, volunteers give their time, staff lead with intention, and neighbors show up for one another, we create more than a successful event. We build trust, visibility, and lasting impact. This event reminded us that joy is also a form of community work, and that gathering together can be one of the most powerful ways to strengthen the neighborhood.
Looking ahead
The momentum from this year’s event has inspired us to continue building opportunities for connection and support. As we plan what comes next, we are excited to deepen partnerships, grow volunteer involvement, and expand the impact we can make together. Because when the community leads, everyone benefits.
